1913年1月13日，英國探險隊隊長Robert Falcon Scott到達南極，卻發現自己已經落敗。挪威人Roald Amundsen一個月前已經到了終點，還故意留下帳篷、物品和一地亂七八糟的雪橇印。
18日，Scott寫道：
"Well, we have turned back now on the goal of our ambition and must face our 800 miles of solid dragging – and goodbye to most of the daydreams!"
